The golden rule to not commit any errors or mistakes is that you completely shut the notion that you could make a mistake out of your mind and think that the interview is going to be smooth. But it is always better to go through the most common mistake that candidates usually commit take upon yourself not to do the same.
1. Don't Lie: In a situation where the discussion comes to a point where you aren't sure of the answer admit the same and tell them you would really learn about the subject at the first opportunity. But never say a lie to cover up for that because the interviewers are knowledgeable people and would make out that you're telling a lie.
2. Keep it professional: The interviewers do make attempts to create an atmosphere where the job seeker feel comfy, but business decorum shouldn't be risked. No personal details should be discussed until specifically asked for and do not ever take rigid stands on things like politics or religious beliefs or talk about current or past events as than can have a negative impact on the interview.
3. Being Rude: If at anything point before, during or after the interview you have accidentally being rude to either the interviewer or company staff then apologize calmly and genuinely. Thereafter do not carry the incident with you rather completely forget about it. What you do suggest as being "rude"? It actually depends on a person to person basis. Do not crack jokes, poke fun about topics that might leave someone with a bitter taste of your sense of humor. Your perspective might be different and might be right as well but what if the interviewer thinks different, so simply why risk a job just because of some thought not being similar.
4. Switch off all pager, cell phones & ipod: Switch off such instrument or gadgets before you enter the interview place. Or else in case your mobile rings right in the middle of an important conversation the interviewer shall has no option but to ask you to leave the office and return once you are done. There will be an interruption which will not have the interviewer amused. Could really cost you the job!
5. Do not speak at all about not gelling as a team member: Almost all interviewers ask how you deal with conflict. Today's working environment requires employees to work as a unit and when there are people working in groups there is bound to be the odd conflict of ideas. Do not reply by saying under such & such circumstances you would tend to differ, rather say you have considerable experience working in teams and are always accommodating of the view of your co-workers.
6. Do not bad mouth your former boss: According to a survey carried out by CareerBuilder.com they have found that 49% candidates were rejected because they said negatively or even derogatorily about their former bosses. If such a question is asked of you, simply remember the good days when you were rewarded for good performance and speak in a standard way of your good experience.
7. Appearing too nervous or over-confident: In case you have very jittery hands, or cold feet and appear too nervous it means you aren't confident enough to do the job. On the other hand if you appear too confident then it could mean you will take things on your own terms.
8. Weak first impression: From the time you enter the office to your first hand shake, in that barely 1 minute, many "don't want to hire them" decisions are completed. If you are able to create a strong first impression, then the interviewer shall look to interviewing you with interest.
9. Do some research: Prior to the interview day, take some time to get versed with the company you are hoping to work for. Search & research about the company's background, get to know what areas the company operates in, their services, goods or products, the extent of their presence and in general what model of operation. It shows not only are you ready to take the interview, but more importantly you want work with the organization.
10. Know your job well: You should be completely prepared to answer almost anything regarding your work profile. Take for instance you are applying for a position in the accounts department so you should know about the latest accounting practices, the most reputed accounting firm in the world, more importantly you should have all data regarding the company's profits, sales figures and names of few clients. If you cannot answer these simple questions then you do not qualify for the job.
